Madeleine Baran is an investigative reporter. She is the host and lead reporter of In the Dark, an investigative podcast produced at The New Yorker. In the Dark’s reporting on a notorious war crime in Iraq forced the U.S. military to release thousands of records, including photos, of the killings and records of hundreds of other alleged war crimes. Baran’s previous reporting helped lead the Supreme Court to overturn the conviction of a Black man on death row in Mississippi. Her work has exposed racial discrimination by prosecutors, a decades-long cover-up of clergy sexual abuse in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, and unchecked violence in mental health institutions. Baran has received the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Award, the George Polk Award, the George Foster Peabody Award, and the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award.
