Susan Chira is the Editor-in-chief of The Marshall Project. Under her leadership, the non-profit news site focusing on criminal justice won a second Pulitzer prize and many others, including Goldsmith, Sigma, Murrow, ONA, and National Magazine awards. The Marshall Project set up news teams in Cleveland, Ohio, and Jackson, MS., and expanded outreach to people behind bars, their families, and other marginalized communities that have felt caricatured by the news media. Chira worked at The New York Times from 1981 to 2019 as a reporter and editor, including as foreign editor and deputy executive editor, overseeing daily news coverage. As senior correspondent on gender issues, she was part of the team awarded the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for coverage of sexual harassment.
