Eric Meyer retired after two decades as an editor and reporter, mainly covering hackers, at The Milwaukee Journal and two more as a tenured journalism professor at Illinois, also serving as an online publisher and consultant. In retirement, he became editor and publisher of a hometown weekly, the Marion County Record, that he had bought into many years earlier to prevent chain ownership. His goal was to practice what he had preached: that seeking technological silver bullets was wasted effort and that getting back to enterprising, watchdog journalism and captivating storytelling could save community newspapers. What greeted him in response was a police raid on his newsroom and the home he shared with his 98-year-old mother and business partner, who died a day later from the stress.
