Dick Tofel is principal of Gallatin Advisory LLC and author of the Second Rough Draft newsletter on Substack. He was the first employee and founding general manager of ProPublica, and its president from 2013-21. Earlier we worked 15 years at the Wall Street Journal, ultimately as the assistant publisher.
